German Films at the 62nd BFI London Film Festival
From 10 to 21 October, the British Film Institute celebrates the diversity of international film in the 62nd London Film Festival, offering a platform for international artists and storytellers. Hot off the reels, here are this year’s German entries.

A woman’s solo sailing journey turns into a serious ethical dilemma, raising questions about empathy, privilege, racism and personal responsibility when she discovers a severely damaged, overloaded refugee boat.

TWENTY-TWO HOURS by Bouchra Khalili
A mixture of iPhone images, videos and live conversation, the film starts with the French poet Jean Genet’s trip to the USA in 1970. Two young African-American women investigate Genet’s connection to the Black Panther Party.

DONBASS by Sergei Loznitsa
In this co-production with the Ukraine, France, Netherlands and Romania, director Sergei Loznitsa — known from “My Joy” and “In the Fog” — shows everyday life in the war zone in the southeast Ukraine in 13 disturbing scenes.

A documentary about the eccentric musician and composer Chilly Gonzales, who mixes contradictory and seemingly irreconcilable musical genres such as chamber music, rap and electronic music.

DREAM AWAY by Omara Marouan and Johanna Domke
The documentary accompanies a group of young Egyptian hotel staff reflecting on their life, hopes and dreams in the terror-stricken and deserted holiday resort of Sharm El Sheikh.

JIM BUTTON AND LUKE THE ENGINE DRIVER by Dennis Gansel
In this children’s film based on a work from the German bestselling author Michael Ende who also wrote the “The Neverending Story”, the adopted Jim goes on a journey through the Kingdoms of Morrowland and Sorrowland to find his roots with the help of engine driver Luke.
